by Sharmeen Ilyas
Do you remember the the pain if some one hits you or strike you even in your childhood or do you have shattered memories of those words which have pierced your soul and somewhere lingering in your memory and from time to time their echoes are clearly loud and clear in your lost lane of memory. The thunder and roar of those words often peek from the cracks and chambers of past. Sometimes, words just not remain words but their prickness always seems to be fresh .The wounds from the harsh words never get healed. On the other hand the world of words can do wonders. Very often, the word power can conquer the whole world. It can shake the strongest soul and it can create a cosmic chaos in a a consciuos world. Why only words just combination of some letters can be so powerful and pounding. Yes the ability of words and expression is not a child’s play. Certainely, it does wonder. As the importance of expressing oneself through speech or writing can’t be underestimated. As in Surah Rahman Allah mentions the importance of ’bayaan’ .
Chapter (55) sūrat l-raḥmān (The Most Gracious)
The Most Merciful
Taught the Qur’an
Created man
He has taught him speech (and intelligence).
The above verses indicates how Allah created Man and then taught Quran and then taught him to express. Therefore, after the creation of mankind, Allah laid out the plan, the blue print for our guidance beautifully explained by Nasir Jhangda in his tafsir of Surah Rahman and then creation of mankind is mentioned. Another marvel was bestowing him the gift of expression, the ability to explain which should not be taken as granted. Moreover, this gift has been mentioned after the dignified blessing of Quran has been mentioned. Consequently, one can imagine how important this gift of expression is. We can’t reach the peak of humanity if we don’t learn Quran and then explain it to others. Furthermore,we have to explain it to others in any way of expression: expression from your actions, from your writings , from your art , from your gestures from your language or any style of presentation. Sadly but truly, how we use this gift along with the gift of Quran, how we belittle the honor of this Ni’maa. Additionally, how we use this faculty which is mentioned after mentioning the Quran. Therefore, there has to be a relation between Quran and the quality of Bayaan. No wonder the first thing to utter , the first words we should say is Alhumdulillah, all praise to Allah and these words are the beginning of Quran in Surah Fatiha. No doubt, the importance to utter or to speak is not a small thing, it is to remember Allah, it is to speak the words of Allah , words of your Lord, your creator, your planner, your sustainer and then when you absorb it well then explain it to others. Without explaining it to others we won’t be able to fulfill the right of Quran and the ability of Bayaan. The word ‘Bayaan’ also has immense depth in it, it doesn’t say speak, it says Bayaaan which means eloquent speech and ability to express oneself. The dynamics between the words are highly inpressive and thought provoking.
If I give you the three words:
REHMAAN, QURAN, INSAAN, BAYAAN.
What relationship one can draw from the above. How would you connect the above FOUR. Surely, it shows first Allah is Merciful. it is due to His mercy that he taught Quran ,the plan for the creation, then the creation, Insaan, then the purpose of the creation thereby smoothing the path between the speech of Lord and speech of a mankind. The relation is crystal clear. Allah has given Quran to Insaan to bayaan, to express oneself clearly not just to speak but to explain in any form, speak or write.
Therefore, after teaching Quran to Prophet Muhammad and then to us, it should be explained eloquently to others and that should be the prime focus of our speech.the tongue and the ability to speech is the Nimah and every nimah comes with responsibility . Therefore,we have to use this nimah in the path of our creator. But lets be honest and examine ourselves. Lets take a sneak preview of what we say in our everyday routine conversation. Honestly, how many words of Quran or message of this divine book has been uttered from our tongue, how many times we praise Allah, we glorify it and convey His message to others . On the contrary, how much gossiping , chattering and cackling we do throughout the day. Ahh, the Most Merciful, the Rehmaan created us and taught His Noble Book and then taught us the ability to express and explain but it is genorously wasted and manipulated by us. We don’t realize the importance and worth of our words. We randomly say things we never think of and we never think after we say something . How unfortunate we are to undermine the importance of this bounty and being playful and neglectful with it.
The reason is nothing again but to be heedless of this message, His book. Once we understand the message profoundly, we’ ll never be negligent. Not only that, in Surah Qaaf Allah mentions how cautious one has to be in speech while making the best out of this blessing.
Chapter (50) sūrat qāf
Sahih International: Man does not utter any word except that with him is an observer prepared [to record].
Everything is recorded but we are still unmindful. The ability to speak is a gift but with every gift , there is a payback. One has to be very careful of what we say as every single word is noted down, it is recorded. Even the hadith explain the same dilemma.
Abu Huraira (RA) narrated : The Prophet(S.A.W) said, “A slave (of Allah) may utter a word which pleases Allah without giving it much importance and due to that Allah will raise him to degrees. A slave (of Allah) may utter a word which displeases Allah without thinking of it’s gravity and due to that he will be thrown into the Hell fire.”( narrated by Bukhari).
Similarly in another narration terrors of useless speech has been emphasized in these words:
Abu Thaalbah Al-Khushani (RA) narrrated: Allah’s Messenger (S.A.W) said, “The dearest to me among you and nearest to me (on the Day of Standing) will be one who is the best of you in conduct; and the one who is most disliked by me among you and furthest from me (on the Day of Standing) will be those who are worst of you in conduct , those who talk with
pretence, the boastful , the talkatives.”
Finally, our Lord’s bounties are countless yet the consequences should be calculated. The quality of bayaan should be used wisely to realize the right of a Creator otherwise one can return to ‘Asfala Safileen’ اسفل سافلىىن instead of gaining the state of احسن تقوىم ‘Ahsana Taqweem’. If we want to maintian the status of Ashraf ul Makhlooqaat, the supreme being, then the creation has to spread the speech of the Creator through the quality of bayaan given to us by the Creator.
sikhaya jis hasti nay tuj ko parhna parhana
usi kay kalam ko hai tujh ko logo tak phuchana
jis nay tujh ko quran ki nai’mat say nawaza
us hasti ko tu nay ab tak kiyo na jaana
chahta hai agar tu us ni ‘mat kaa haq ada karna
to bas is kitab kay zarya hai har aik ko jagaana
har dil har dharkan har nafs ka yahi rahay tarana
kay sirf teri zaat, teri hasti, teri raza ko hai paana
agar tu nay yeh paay liya to sab kuch hai paaya
agar ye naa paaya to kuch bhi nahi hai paaya

If - A Father to his Son......a poem by Rudyard Kipling
If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too:
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or, being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise;
If you can dream and not make dreams your master;
If you can think and not make thoughts your aim,
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same:
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build'em up with worn-out tools;
If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings,
And never breathe a word about your loss:
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on!"
If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings---nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much:
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too:
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or, being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated don't give way to hating,

Legends-Ahmed E. H. Jaffer
(With special thanks to Memon.com)
The above name in fact represents a family tree and includes not only Ahmed, but his father Sir Ebrahim, his grandfather, Haroon, and his ureat grandfather, Jaffer. All of them were very well-known Kucchi Memons.
Jaffer started his business empire in 1861 in Pune, near Bombay, which was then one of the main cantonment of the British army. Jaffer was not only the leader of the Muslims, but he was a well-known philanthropist also.
Jaffer's son, Haroon, also kept the family tradition alive and was well known in the Bombay Presidency. Ebrahim was a noted Muslim leader and a leading businessman. He became member of the Bombay Le(,islative Assembly in 19 1 0 and in 1915. Up to 1930 he remained a member of the Council of State, New Delhi. In 1920, he was appointed to the Imperial Council of India which acted as Advisory Committee to the Viceroy of India. In 1914 he was awarded the title of 'Khan Bahadur' and in 1926, knighthood was conferred on him. Sir Ebrahim took active part in spreading education amongst the Muslims and he presided over the Bombay Muslim Education Conference which was attended by Sir Akbar Hydery, Sir Ghulam Husain Hidayatullah, Dr. Ziauddin Ahmed. His educational activities got the patronage of the British Governor of Bombay.
He established a big Hall ( Jaffer Hall) in Pune in the name of his grandfather. He was instrumental in getting two hours' break for the Muslims working in the Government departments to enable them to offer Juma prayers. He also managed to remove illegal possession by the Government of the Shahi Mosque of Ahmednaaar. He took up the cause of renovating the Mazar of the Mughal Emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar in Rangoon. Though he was successful in getting the Mazar included in the list of historical monuments, the renovation work could not be completed during his life time. He died at an early age of 50.
Ahmed E. H. Jaffer was born in 1909. After matriculation, he joined Deccan College, Pune, for further education. He was a very ardent sport lover. He wanted to join Indian Civil Service but his father was against it or any other service so he joined the family business.
He was the chairman of the Reception Committee of All India Muslim Educational Conference held in 1940. This conference was presided over by the Chief Minister of Bengal Mouivi Faziul Haq and the inauguration ceremony was performed by the then Governor of Bombay.
Ahmed Jaffer was elected to the Indian Legislative Assembly while he was 24 years old. The defeated candidate, Hussain Bhai Laijee, filed a petition that under the Constitution of India, a person below the age of 25 could not be elected as a member of the Assembly. But very soon, in 1946, he again defeated the same opponent from the same constituency to become the youngest legislator.
The Quaid-e-Azam appointed him Deputy Whip of the Muslim League party in the Assembly. Coming over to Pakistan, he naturally remained a member of the Constituent Assembly and Parliament and remained as such till 1954 when Governor-General Ghulam Muhammad dissolved the parliament.
Ahmed Jaffer is well-known as a member for putting the highest number of questions in the Parliament on various aspects, particularly about the problems faced by the Mohajirs.
For the rehabilitation of the refugees he became the Chairman of the Board of Refugees Rehabilitation, Sindh, and was instrumental in establishing the First Mohajir Colony in the Gizri area of Karachi.
Ahmed became a well-known industrialist having assumed the chairmanship of several public and private limited companies, including some of his own. He was designated Chief-de-Mission of the Pakistan Squad for the Rome Olympic Games. He remained associated with a number of foreign organisations such as Gulf Chamber, Pak-German Cultural Association, Pak-Kuwait Friendship Association, Foreign Affairs Council of Pakistan, Pakistan-Arab Cultural Society, Old and New Parliamentarians Association, National Playing Fields Association of Pakistan, English Speaking Union of Pakistan and many other such organisations.
He went as Pakistan's delegate to many countries. He was a well-known collector of stamps and was a keen sportsman playing squash, tennis, golf. He was good at horse riding, and swimming. He was also a member of the Karachi Aero Club, Karachi Boat Club, Karachi Gymkhana, Karachi Race Course, Rawalpindi Gymkhana and Lahore Gymkhana. He was also a member of prestigious clubs of England.
He received many awards such as Sitara-e-Pakistan and foreign awards from Spain, Brazil, Jordan and the Government of U. K. At the age of 8 1, he was invited to Islamabad to attend a meeting which was convened by the Government to discuss celebrating the Pakistan Golden Jubilee in a befitting manner. But he died there of a massive heart attack.
Beacon Of Light-Abdul Razak Dawood by Jamil Goheer
Humans are the greatest source of inspirations; at times ordinary, at times extra-ordinary. They are all around us, only if we can pick up or learn from them. Inspirations, ideally, are like chain reactions. You get inspired and you inspire others and the reaction goes on. But then again, inspirations start from somewhere. As noted by someone, “There never was a great soul that did not have some divine inspiration”. Surely, those are the few who actually kick start the chain reaction.
Observing people have remained a great way of learning that I have thoroughly enjoyed. One of those learning aid is the Founder and Chairman of Descon Engineering Group, Mr. Abdul Razak Dawood. In case you are one of those who never heard about Descon Group, it’s the largest construction and engineering company from Pakistan positioning itself rapidly in the global markets.
Descon Quick Recap: In less than 3 decades, Abdul Razak Dawood transformed DESCON from a 1977 startup with 4 engineers to more than 1600 engineers and professionals (employee strength reaching 40,000) globally competitive engineering company based out of Pakistan. Today, Descon has 15 businesses in engineering, chemicals and power under their portfolio with 0.9 million man hours/year of engineering capacity and 72 million man hours/year of construction capacity. Some call this a vision, but there is someone definitely more than a visionary over here.
Portfolio in brief: Abdul Razak Dawood served as the former Federal Minister for Commerce, Industries and Production, Government of Pakistan for four years. He is the Chairman Pakistan Business Council and Managing Director of Descon Engineering Limited and six other private companies. His former corporate positions included, CEO Dawood Hercules Chemicals and Managing Director Lawrencepur Woolen & Textile. He has been on the board of various corporate giants such as ICI Pakistan, KSB Pumps, United Refrigeration Ltd, PIA, & State Bank of Pakistan. He taught at Department of Business Administration, University of Punjab and is the Member Syndicate, the University of Punjab as well as member Senate, University of Punjab. Mr. Abdul Razak Dawood has been an active philanthropist and at present he is the Rector, Lahore University of Management Sciences to which his family has donated generously; Vice Chairman, Board of Governors National Management Foundation; Member, Board of Directors Shaukat Khanum Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, Trustee CARE Foundation and Member, Board of Directors NUML College. Mr. Dawood is a BSc. Mining Engineering from England and MBA from Columbia University, USA.
I heard about him for the first time when I applied to LUMS and met him for the first time at my convocation while he handed me over my degree. Little did I know that in the years to come I will be lucky enough to be directly mentored by him and have him on our board of advisors for Kualitatem. Though I have got a chance multiple times to hear random briefs from his valuable experiences but never got a chance to hear his life story, until recently at a TIE gathering. Abdul Razak Dawood has no doubt transformed his thought leadership into action leadership and has institutionalized it to a greater extent producing stream of future leaders. There is a lot one can learn from him and his experiences. Here are some important notes I managed to jot down during his talk and thought to share and contribute in that chain reaction.
Abdul Razak Dawood [1]: “Ladies and gentle men, assalam-o-alykum. Today I have been asked to give my story about my experiences in business, of being involved in education and basically being an entrepreneur. But I must say that usually I feel a little uncomfortable talking about myself and what I have done. In today’s talk I will spend some time talking about my career, but a little bit more time on strategic decisions, visions, values and qualities required for being an entrepreneur.”
[2] “I graduated from Columbia University and landed back in Pakistan in October 1968 after 18 years. Got married within 3 weeks and then issue came within the family; where should they park this young lad who just came back from America. Lawrencepur, district Attock was decided for me and I gathered my dreams, passion and commitment and went to Lawrencepur where I simply fell in love with the place. I loved the community life, loved the people, I loved the opportunities. It was magnificent. Not because it was easy, but it was challenging and here I was ready to face them while being in the trenches. I was welcomed by a strike letter on my first day on my desk. As I struggled to set things straight over the months, I introduced a new brand for ladies called “Layla”. While it was rejected by big brands like HKB, Bombay Cloth House etc. we ran a TV commercial and bang; it was a hit. Next, we advertised Layla for PKR 80,000/- budget over 4 months despite the strong resistance from my father. The results changed the world and the next time around it was my father who urged to raise the budget for advertisement.
